The threat of pirates, Turks and other invaders forced the Maniots to fortify and defend themselves by dwelling in stone-built towers with battlements (ntoufekotroupes), murder holes (or katachioustries) and protrusions for throwing stones (petromachoi). Each Maniot belonged to a “patria” (family) and by guarding his tower, he defended the entire family living in the complex of a patria. A notable characteristic is that these complexes communicated with each other through underground labyrinths, called "katouya", "therides" and "katarrachtes".
