Few art forms have remained alive for more than two and a half millennia. Mosaic is one of them. From the intricate floors of ancient Greece and Rome to the magnificent Byzantine masterpieces, this timeless art continues to evolve while preserving its unique beauty and enduring appeal.
At Akrolithi Boutique Hotel & Guesthouse, this remarkable tradition becomes an authentic hands-on experience. Through our Mosaic Workshops, we invite you to discover mosaic art not as a spectator, but as a creator, in a place where stone, light and the sea naturally become part of the artistic process.
Each Mosaic Workshop takes place on the panoramic terrace of Akrolithi, overlooking the endless blue waters of Oitylo Bay. Here, creativity follows the rhythm of Mani itself. The peaceful landscape, the ever-changing light and the openness of the horizon become an integral part of the experience.
Every workshop is arranged exclusively by prior appointment and tailored to each guest's schedule—even for a single participant. This allows every session to maintain its personal character, offering an unhurried experience with all the time you need to enjoy the creative process.
In approximately two to three hours, each participant creates a 25 × 25 cm mosaic artwork featuring an integrated mirror, which is completed and taken home the very same day.
The standard design draws inspiration from the geometric patterns and timeless aesthetics of Mani. More personalised creations can also be arranged, depending on the available time and the individual preferences of each participant.
The very first design created for the Akrolithi Mosaic Workshops was inspired by the ancient mosaic of Cape Tainaron, known as the "Star of Aria", one of the region's most significant examples of cultural heritage. Over the years, this design has become one of the signature artworks associated with the Mosaic Workshop experience at Akrolithi.
The process is simple, enjoyable and accessible to everyone. No previous experience is required—only the desire to create something uniquely your own, with your own hands.
The Mosaic Workshop is open both to Akrolithi guests and to external visitors wishing to enjoy an authentic creative experience in Mani.
With personal guidance throughout every stage from experienced mosaic artists, the workshop is suitable for adults, couples, families, groups of friends, as well as children accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Each session lasts approximately two to three hours, with starting times arranged according to each guest's schedule, allowing the experience to fit naturally into their holiday.
All materials are provided by the workshop organisers, yet every element has been carefully selected.
The workshop uses handcrafted ceramic tesserae produced by local artisans in Mani. Their colours and textures have been chosen to reflect the region's distinctive stone, earth, natural light and rugged landscape.
As a result, every artwork carries the authentic colours, character and spirit of Mani itself.
The Mosaic Workshops are organised in collaboration with Piece of Art Mani and renowned mosaic artist Stefanos Dinos.
A graduate of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Italy—one of the world's most prestigious schools of mosaic art—Stefanos Dinos has been creating mosaic works throughout Greece and internationally for more than three decades. His work has been honoured with the Gold Award of the Panhellenic Association of Decorators and Architects, and today he lives and works in Eastern Mani, where he continues to share his expertise by teaching the art of mosaic.
This collaboration perfectly reflects Akrolithi's philosophy of showcasing Mani through its people. Every workshop becomes a personal encounter with an artist who has dedicated his life to mosaic art and continues to pass on his knowledge and passion to future generations.
Although every mosaic is completed within just a few hours, its story is only beginning.
One of the most rewarding moments for us is receiving photographs from guests, months later, showing their mosaic displayed in their own homes. It is a feeling that words can hardly describe, because it proves that the artwork became far more than a holiday souvenir-it found a meaningful place in their everyday lives.
For the Akrolithi family, this is perhaps the greatest reward of all: knowing that an experience born on the terrace of our boutique hotel, overlooking the breathtaking Bay of Oitylo, continues to evoke beautiful memories every time someone looks at the piece they created with their own hands.
We look forward to welcoming you to this truly unique experience and helping you create memories of Mani that will last a lifetime.
